About Me
Archana Shekara is a Professor of Graphic Design, Co-Director of Ethnic Studies, and Creative Director of Design Streak Studio, a research based social innovation lab at Illinois State University. She is the Coordinator of the Graphic Design partnership with Illinois State University and Tianhua College of Art + Design in Shanghai. Archana uses design as a tool to build cross-cultural understanding, acceptance, and respect. As a socio-cultural researcher, she investigates her transnational identity as an Indian-American by understanding racial equity through a brown cultural lens using ethnographic narratives. She has disseminated her research both nationally and internationally. Her scholarship includes design pedagogy related to cross-cultural awareness and identity, immigration, social justice, and community engagement. Archana is the founder and chair of South Asian Design Educators Alliance (SADEA) which brings South Asian design histories and perspectives into mainstream conversations in design globally.
